Summary in English: Significance of Putradaa Ekadashi

There is no parallel to observance of Ekadashi Vrata of all Vratas. The Ekadasi of Shuklapaskha of the month of Pushya is known as ‘Putradaa Ekadashi’. People who observe this Vrata are bestowed with prosperity, fame and worthy children.

Lord Krishna explains to Yudhishtra the significance of this Vrata as under:

Long ago there lived a king named Sukethaman along with his wife, queen Shybya in the city of Bhadravati. They were very much worried and sad about them having no children despite performing all types of rituals and observing spiritual practices. Finally, after giving up all hopes of having a son, they gave up the kingdom and left for the forest. There they came across a hermitage and went towards the same.

They saw 11 hermits and asked them, who they were and why they were in the forest. The hermits replied that they are ‘Vishve Devatas’ who have come down to earth to observe the Shukla Paksha Ekadashi of the holy month of Pushya which is also known as ‘Putradaa Ekadashi’ since the Almighty had indicated to them that the people who observe the ‘Putradaa Ekadashi’ on Earth are blessed with worthy children.

Upon hearing this, the King requested ‘Vishve Devatas’ that he too may please be allowed to observe the same under their guidance and shelter for which they gladly agreed. The King after having observed ‘Putradaa Ekadashi’ under their august guidance and having obtained their blessings returned back to the kingdom along with his queen and was blessed with a son soon.

The boy grew up into a very pious and able young man who respected his parents, all elders and the Lord and ruled the kingdom in a very befitting way.
This episode was narrated by Lord Krishna to Yudhishtra in ‘Bhavishyothara Purana’
